Sets up, and operates manual lathe machinery. These include but are not limited to manual lathes, drills, and other machinery as required.
PRIMARY DUTIES:

The candidate must be capable of lifting 20 pounds and with use of mechanical aids manipulate parts or machines exceeding 2,000 pounds.
Machinist – Manual Lathe
BASIC FUNCTION:Sets up, and operates manual lathe machinery. These include but are not limited to manual lathes, drills, and other machinery as required.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Set up, adjust and operate a variety of manual machines to perform diversified, tight tolerance operations. Select proper tooling and set appropriate speeds. Determine clamping methods and make machine adjustments with minimum use of fixtures.
- Nature of operations are complex, having critical dimensions. Must maintain quality and tolerances up to .0005”. Apply technical application knowledge in tooling, blue print reading including GDT, and processes for a wide variety of materials. Duties include machining complex geometries and threading. May be required to grind own tools for special requirements.
- Must be familiar with independent four jaw chucks.
- 3 and 6 jaw scroll style chucks to be used for certain operations
- Experience with split parts is a plus. Whereas split meaning two halves to make one ring. Must maintain correct chuck pressures to avoid distorting part as parts need to remain round in a free state
- Follow written and verbal procedures for machining and other duties.
- Read and interpret instructions from blueprints, work order routings, sketches, layout sheets, both written and verbal, etc.
- Must be able to recognize and understand machine functions with the ability to modify as required per supervisor’s instructions.
- Utilize knowledge of working properties for a variety of materials such as stainless steel, alloy steel, cast iron, brass, copper, etc. Some thermoplastic experience is a plus.
- Working knowledge of tooling that requires the responsibility for selection.
- Inspect work produced using micrometer; bore gage, venire calipers, or other measuring instruments to verify conformance to specifications within .0005” tolerance.
- Perform duties in accordance with company safety policies, reports unsafe conditions to supervisor.
- Make proper labor and time report entries.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Keep machine(s) / work area clean and orderly.
- Perform daily PM task to equipment being used.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities based upon individual group requirements.
Requires a High School diploma with a technical school education or equivalent experience and:
- Requires a minimum of 3 years previous work experience on manual lathe equipment doing comparable work.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, process prints and work related machine drawings, including the ability to visualize rotation of round parts from 2-dimension drawings.
- Make average to complicated mathematical calculations and resolve elementary technical problems, including basic geometric and trigonometry calculations.
- Ability to use high tolerance measuring gauges such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.
- Mechanical aptitude, detail orientated, quality and safety minded.
The candidate must be capable of lifting 20 pounds and with use of mechanical aids manipulate parts or machines exceeding 2,000 pounds.
